Ben Franklin Park – Knoxdale Rd

Located in the west end of Ottawa, Nepean is a diverse community that is home to many family-centric communities and neighbourhoods. These include the Tanglewood/Medhurst, Hog’s Back, Prince of Wales, and the Carleton Heights park. Originally a borough in its own right, it was merged with the City of Ottawa in 2001 to form the new Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton. The name Nepean remains in common usage today.

Nepean is a large suburban neighbourhood that features a plethora of shopping destinations, including Merivale Road, West Hunt Club, College Square, and Bell’s Corners. It’s also a hub for both public and private clubs, including the Rideau Canoe Club, Algonquin College, and the various arts and sports organizations in the area.

In addition to its numerous shopping options, Nepean has several parks to enjoy. It’s home to a number of ice skating rinks, splash pads, tennis courts, and other outdoor facilities. Other notable attractions are the Centrepointe Theatre, the largest of its kind in Canada, and the Nepean Sportsplex.

There is also a surprisingly large amount of culture in the area. Not only is the Nepean Recreation Centre the largest of its kind in the city, it also hosts a wide variety of social events and programs for all ages.

Centrepointe Theatre

Centrepointe is a family-friendly neighbourhood in the west of Ottawa, Ontario. With schools and green spaces, it is a great place to raise a family. You’ll find lots of shopping, dining, and entertainment options in this neighbourhood. In addition, it is home to the Nepean Sportsplex, an outdoor complex with three full-sized ice skating rinks, tennis courts, volleyball, and more.

There are also several parks and playgrounds in the area. These include Craig Henry Park, Knoxdale Road Park, and Charing Park. Each of these features a tobogganing hill and a play structure. They also have sports fields, a wading pool, and more.

Residents of Centrepointe can enjoy easy access to the neighbourhood’s public library, a recreation center, and more. It’s located on a quiet cul-de-sac street.

Craig Henry was developed in the early 1970s. Jack Aaron developed the neighbourhood, which borders Greenbank Road to the west. The neighbourhood was hit by a tornado on September 21, 2018. Several businesses and homes were damaged.

The neighbourhood’s population is 186,593 as of the 2021 Census. Some of the community’s best features are its parks, public and private clubs, and its proximity to the Greenbelt.

Located in the venn diagram of Ottawa and the CN rail line, Craig Henry Park is a slender little sliver of the city. The parks and open spaces surrounding it are a treasure trove for families and aficionados alike. For starters, it features the trifecta – a pitch ball diamond (baseball), an IMAX theatre and a plaza for local businesses to mingle.

On the flip side, the neighbourhood is surrounded by two major roads to contend with. Greenbank Road beckons on the west while Woodroffe Avenue is to the east. Craig Henry is served by OC Transpo route 82. It is also home to the Sir Robert Borden High School. A cursory glance at the neighbourhood’s school schedule reveals that it offers a surprisingly broad spectrum of education opportunities. Nevertheless, the city does boast of a few high achieving schools. While not all of the neighbourhood’s high schools can be counted among the cream of the crop, the aforementioned Nepean High School stands out in the crowd.

Despite the aforementioned mediocre public school system, Nepean boasts a slew of private educational institutions. There are several top notch schools to choose from including Broadview Public School, Prince of Wales Secondary School and the Notre Dame High School.
